Fun at Work

November 17th, 2008 · 1 Comment

I know it’s been awhile since my last post, I’m sorry. Two weeks ago I landed a new job, and have been adjusting to my new schedule, while having the time of my life ever since.

Over the past several months I have interviewed with countless companies, turned down two job offers that were not right for me, and finally, landed my dream job.

I accepted a Web Manager position with an online yarn retailer called Yarnmarket. Yarnmarket has numerous Websites that need managed, and a plethora of new Web projects for me to tackle. The past two weeks I have been working on an online fashion magazine for knitters called Knitch. It’s so much fun that I can’t believe I’m getting paid to do it!

A new MacBook Pro, Adobe Creative Suite 4, wonderful upper management and flexibility that allows me to telecommute most days makes this the job I’ve been dreaming about for months. I’m so thrilled to finally have access to the professional software I need to accomplish designs that were not possible before. Flash animated banners, here I come!

You’re probably thinking that all this fun can’t last forever, and maybe you’re right. But right now I’m so excited to wake up and get to work each day that I can’t imagine the feeling fading anytime soon.

All of this recent job euphoria led me to wonder any of you have the same preference for working environments as I do. So please share. What is your ideal job and/or work environment, and why?

Is Product Placement the New Cancer of Blogs?

October 22nd, 2008 · 5 Comments

Product Placement

Following the birth of TIVO and DVR, we began seeing television shows that are so diluted with product placements, that it’s difficult to determine if the writers even had a say in the script. A typical character line (even in those so-called reality shows) might sound something like this, “After I get back from this XYZ cruise, I’m going to take you to Pearflys for dinner so we can talk about our new Electurbo car purchase.” In the background, music from a carefully selected artist is playing, and the characters are most likely drinking an energy drink while watching another one of the networks t.v. shows, and plugging away on a recognizable brand of laptop. Once you realize this is happening, you will never watch t.v. without noticing the persuasive ploys of these brand pushers again. [Read more →]

Blogging Blunders I’ve Made (So Far)

October 14th, 2008 · 10 Comments

An Honest Mistake

It’s been nearly two weeks since I took the plunge. Joining the ranks of social media and eMarketing bloggers everywhere has been an exhilarating process, but things have not gone perfectly. I’m still in the process of learning all of the blogging etiquette rules–and as I’m sure many new bloggers can relate–I’ve unintentionally broken a rule (or two…or three). [Read more →]

Social Media Blogs that Rock :: Top 4

October 8th, 2008 · 9 Comments

Firstly, I want to explain that the following list is not comprehensive. I know there are many, many great bloggers out there that make huge contributions to the topic of social media. That being said, these are the most helpful, interesting social media centered (or influenced) blogs I have discovered this week through my newly formed Twitter community: @jennymccutcheon. An (Almost) Week in Twitterland

October 6th, 2008 · 4 Comments

I have to admit, when I first heard about Twitter some months ago I didn’t really get it. Who has time to write and read little updates from random people all day long? I was dead wrong about the power, and usefulness of this microblogging site. [Read more →]

Columbus Social Media Cafe Meeting 9/30

As I walked down the short flight of stairs at the Upper Arlington library Tuesday night, I felt a twinge of nervousness.  I was about to attend my first Columbus Social Media Cafe (CSMC) meeting–and I’m so glad I did. [Read more →]
